UtahID Multi-Factor Authentication Changes

Effective Monday, November 22, 2021 shortly after 5:00 PM, Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) will be required for all new UtahID public user accounts. This change will only impact applications currently using UtahID for the public.

New users will have the option to have the MFA code sent by email or SMS text message. Please note, when a user first registers, the only option available will be email since that is the available method listed on the account until the user adds a mobile phone number to their profile in https://id.utah.gov.

For existing UtahID public users, please note the following:
  • Existing users will still need to register for MFA using the Security tab, since MFA will not automatically be required. If a user has not previously signed up for MFA, the only options a user will see is Email and SMS.
  • Existing users that have previously registered for MFA and selected Yubikey or Push will still have these options in the Security Menu since they still need to be able to generate new recovery codes.
  • Existing users that are going to a site that requires MFA and the user has not registered for MFA, will continue to see the existing Multi-Factor Registration page since no changes to the screens are being done for the change on November 22nd.
