ORS Server Consolidation Project

The Server Consolidation project at ORS has been completed successfully in a period of approximately 3 years.  The ORS NDS, Netware server, desktop and application environments have been consolidated and standardized with that of the rest of the Department of Human Services (DHS).  The ORS NDS container was under the ADM container which did not conform to the standard structure that has been established for the rest of the agencies that fall under DHS.  This necessitated the transition to a new NDS container and structure that is consistent with all other DTS supported DHS sites.  Seven servers have been consolidated down to one main Netware server, one GroupWise server and one backup server.  Zenworks has been upgraded to version 7.01 and many of the applications have been rebuilt and/or updated.

Productivity and Efficiency Gains:

  • 226 groups were eliminated from the old NDS container.
  • Unneeded application objects were eliminated.
  • New application objects were either rebuilt or created for applications that demonstrated issues in the new environment.
  • Desktop policies were modified and standardized as much as possible.
  • The number of servers was reduced from seven to three.
  • The login script for the ORS container was streamlined.
  • The NDS container was standardized to the same standard that was being used for the other DTS-Office of Technology (DTS-OT) supported sites.
  • The file structure of the Netware servers was standardized to that being used for the other DTS-OT supported sites.
  • Images for desktop re-imaging were cleaned up, which resolved some boot up speed issues.
  • There were no major periods of down time for the end users.
  • Several network management tools and software were upgraded.
    • Zenworks
    • GroupWise
    • Novell Netware Client

We commend the DTS employees at DHS involved with the project, led by Peter Freeman, for their hard work in the successful completion of the project.
